Boardwalk Empire. Season 3

HBO

Alternative title for this season: The Ballad of Gyp Rosetti. (I just love using “The Ballad of insert-name-here”. Makes it sound more poetic.)

Anyway, Gyp Rosetti is this guy:

HBO
Played by Bobby Cannavale, whose dick could be seen
dangling just a few seconds before this shot.

A guy whose voice reminds me of a pre-Saving Private Ryan Vin Diesel – less gravelly, but on the way there. He is introduced in the season pilot as a hothead (not the adorable Sonny Corleone type) and a massive douchebag, and he dies in the season finale.

HBO
Thank God. And fuck you, Rosetti.

While Nucky the gangster (Steve Buscemi) has an affair with a showgirl (who could’ve been played by Karen Gillan if only she had an American accent), his wife Margaret (Kelly Macdonald) gets busy with Mr. Slater (Charlie Cox) once more. And the sad part about it is that both side dishes die gruesome deaths, while Mr. and Mrs. Thompson live to die another day. And speaking of love interests, Gillian Darmody (Gretchen Mol) takes in a new lover, who she makes sure reminds her of her departed son Jimmy. Oedipal, and sick. Maybe reverse-Oedipal, if there is such a thing. Also, in this season, the deformed Richard Harrow (Jack Huston) finally finds love, and finally gets a kiss on his half-shattered mouth.

HBO
Good for you, Two-Face.

In basketball terms, this show has such a deep bench, with everybody pitching in to make this one of the greatest shows on television. One story arc I wish they’d explore more was Agent Van Alden’s. Michael Shannon is a great actor, and he could’ve used more screen time for Season 3.

HBO
Nobody does the crazy eyes better than Michael Shannon.
