Review: World War Z 3D, or Five Elements of a Zombie Film

YouTube

World War Z… or as the Brits would say, World War Zed.

Or as some Filipinos would say, "World War Zey".

My favorite film genres are the whodunit, the heist, the biopic, and the zombie film. "But wait," you say in your annoying film major voice, "zombie isn't a proper genre. It is simply a subspecies of the horror genre."

Let me first stop you right there and say that 1) you are wrong; and 2) I can prove that "zombie" is a proper film genre. Let me enumerate its elements.

A status quo (which changes)
That clean mug is the status quo of Brad Pitt's face.

The status quo, in this case, is a zombie-free world. Sometimes, a film may show the status quo at the start, or sometimes a film already starts with zombies, implying the status quo through flashbacks. And the status quo is broken by…

An outbreak
Like ants. Or termites.

In this film, Brad Pitt does some detective work to locate the very first zombie in order to find a cure. The outbreak, usually viral in nature, must result in…

Zombies
YouTube
Zombie hordes resemble Filipino commuters during rush hour.

Without zombies, you have no zombie film. The film Contagion also had an outbreak, but it did not result in zombies, which is why Contagion isn't a zombie film. Because zombie films should also have…

A Quest
When does Brad Pitt ever look ugly?

It's mostly a quest to find a cure, or a quest to get away from the zombies. World War Z shows both, with Brad Pitt off to find the cure, and his family off to get away from the zombies. And finally, zombie films usually have…

No Solid Narrative
Family drama does not equal narrative.

It's usually just a fright-fest. Plus blood and gore. That's mostly it.

P.S. There will be no 3D review, as this is simply a mediocre converted 3D flick.

6.5: Entertaining but sabaw. Haha. There wasn't even enough blood and gore being a PG13 film, but it had more than enough annoying effin' croaking.
