Would You Change Your Feet? (Brave 2011 Review)

Last Friday, I saw Brave.

I chose this poster because Russian.

Brave (2012) "Determined to make her own path in life, Princess Merida defies a custom that brings chaos to her kingdom. Granted one wish, Merida must rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo a beastly curse.

I will first point out here that Brave is more of a(n atypical) Disney Princess story (tell you why in a bit) than a mature Pixar film. I agree that it didn't turn out as advertised; they sold it as an epic adventure with tons of magic. I think guys would call this a total bait-and-switch, at least my boyfriend did. He thinks it's like Brother Bear. I haven't seen Brother Bear yet btw. That didn't bother me, though. In fact, poofy redhead Merida is now my favorite Disney princess.

House Dunbroch!

What makes Brave an atypical Disney Princess story?
  1. She is not bullied by an evil step-mother. Her family is wonderful. She's a daddy's girl. She is privileged.
  2. It is family-centric, not marriage-centric. No love interest. Finally.
  3. The princess knows herself, what she wants, and most of all what she does not want. She just WANTS to keep it that way.
  4. There is no real villain. The battle is very internal. What needs fixing is Merida (and her mom, because ugh MOTHERS!).

Naturally, a little tomboy who loves riding, archery, and adventure wouldn't enjoy the proper princess life and traditions. How do you shove some humble pie in the (cute) face of a headstrong, stubborn, high birth, TEENAGE type?

Make her fuck shit up.

Enter "WOOD CARVER!"

"I'm a wit...tler of wood!"

She looks like Yubaba and King Bumi had a kid. Sorry for the mental image. I like her very much. Chaotic neutral, this "wood carver" lady.

I'm obviously not going to give away the rest of the story. Be careful what you wish for etc etc. It is Disney after all.

Everyone's funny.

What else makes me like Brave?
  1. Celtic stuff.
  2. Castles and stuff.
  3. Brute funny warrior men and stuff.
  4. Dat hair.
  5. Merida is so cute and squishy. I want to pick her up and hug her and carry her around.
  6. Great for girls with mommy, um, conflicts. Your girl complains about her mom being so strict and this and that. Take her to Brave. Bring tissues (or handkerchief if you want to look environmental).
  7. Everything is funny. Everything doesn't stop being funny.
  8. BEARS. \m/

A few final notes:

Secret of Kells = mythology, magic, stylistic animation.
