Kotonoha no Niwa (The Garden of Words) is Makoto Shinkai's 2013 release. It's a typical Shinkai love story because the characters don't end up together. (A love story is different from a romance because the latter requires that its characters end up together.)
It's a 42-minute movie about a chance relationship between a 15-year-old highschooler and, as he later finds out, a 27-year-old teacher from his school.
The main characters get annoying at some point but, I have a feeling Shinkai intended that. I get this because they didn't end up together and because they actually call each other out on it. There's a hint of hope, though. And I think the movie deals with relationships like this fairly because of all that.
But the reason I really recommend this film is its animation. Here's a teaser:
Just for the animation, I give it a 6.5/10.
